Cloud Computing Delivering Its Promises

Highlights:

•    51 percent of organisations are now using at least one cloud-based application.

•    US businesses are slightly more adoptive of cloud based technology than UK businesses; this percentage is 56 for US and 50 in UK.

•    Usage of cloud based services is also increasing at higher rate, according to a survey in 2009 only 36 percent of US businesses were using cloud services.

•    70 % of the US businesses are considering adopting this technology where this percentage is only 60 for businesses in UK.

•    Cloud based emails being the most popular service, it is been used by 62 % of the organisations that use cloud based alternatives.

•    Other most popular services among companies that use cloud computing are security, storage and documents like Google Docs, more than 50% of those companies get benefit of these services.

•    Usage of cloud based applications also depends on the size of the company:

o    Small business (under 250 employees) – cloud storage services are preferred.
o    Mid size business (250-1000) employees – email services are most popular.
o    Larger business (over 1,000) employees – Cloud storage service are commonly used.

Summary:

Email, security and storage are the most popular cloud services. For improved communication and better security, organizations are switching their internal systems from on-site solutions to a cloud-based alterative. Companies pay for such services on a subscription basis. Now government agencies are also using these applications for improves communication and security.
